The Official Interview...
Questions posed by Johnnie Walker
1. You are a Korean living in Singapore. Are there many Koreans living in Singapore?
I think there are about 500 Korean families living in Singapore, which would translate to about 3000 people including children, currently living in Singapore. *Best to my knowledge*I don't know if you would call it a lot but conparatively, to the world ratio, no. Its small.
There are about 5.4 million Korean living abroad. In North America there are about 2 million Koreans. the next largest korean community would be China, followed by Japan. I know. Weird...
2. Are there any decent Korean restaurants in Singapore?
There used to be. But unfortunately its no more. Incidentally, my mum used to own it so... Maybe I'm just a little biased. Mum's cooking is always the best, heh Johnnie?
Its a long story why we closed, all I can say is... Lousy bureaucratic Singaporean companies... *Next!*
3. Have you, or anyone you know, been caned after committing a crime?
Ooh... Now you're getting into the dirt. Well, I've not been caned nor do I know anyone who has been caned by the Police. But! I have been caned, many times, in school. Ever since 4th grade. I hear, the vice-principle of my school and my dad were really close. Why? Well, because my dad was a frequent visitor to the school. Oh the meetings...
I think I was called into the principle's office every 2 weeks. For a caning or worst... I think after a while, she must have gotten tired of the caning. So she decided to seat me down and talk to me instead. That terrified me more than the caning. I must have cost her a bomb just for the therapy I was putting her through.
Wonder where she is now...
4. Do you think caning is cruel and/or unusual punishment?

My answer.
5. I heard some national athlete got executed for smuggling drugs into Singapore. What was your reaction to the execution?
Yeah, talk about national shame. Not the athlete. Well, yes he screwed up. But hang him? I say nay. I was kind of, not interested in the whole thing. I knew he was going to hang the moment I saw the news. Just like the Casino issue. Its a facade, just something to tell the poeple later on, "well, we discussed it", when the result was already made a long time ago.
That man was tried, hanged and dead even before they passed the sentence.
Singapore has the world's highest execution rate relative to its 4.2-million population. The government doesn't want to lose that record. The Singaporean Kiasu mentality. Kiasu roughly translates to "afraid to lose".

I love the home cooked Korean meals. My friend's mom makes really good Korean food!!
Fortunatelly, there are so many good Korean restaurants in Los Angeles. Talking about it is already making me hungry..
Hey Don, great answers! I am now in Ami's hood, so I can attest to the fact that there are, indeed, many good Korean restaurants around here.
Man, I'm sorry to hear you were caned several times in your youth. It looks quite painful!
ami: Wow, lucky you... I remember all the times I went "experimenting" at different restaurants in Singapore, spending money on food I couldn't give to a hungry dog.
Its kind of comtemptous to poison a dog... :P Besides, I'm a dog lover myself~ Much like yourself. I had 2 dogs, 1 terripoo *X btw a terrier & a poodle.* and a yellow labrador.
Sadly I had to give them away before I came to Korea. I miss them greatly... Its like a piece of me is gone with them... *Sigh*
johnnie walker: The pain from the caning was only physical. Its the emotional roller coaster the process takes you through thats gonna fuck you up... :P
Its a wonder I'm still socially functional. Haha.. Caning is a very Asian tradition. The cold adage, "spare the rod, spoil the child".
People don't underrstand that its a thin line between discipline and child abuse.
Discipline your child, but don't abuse him...
Excuse me! You did not give terripoo away! As she belongs to both you and me, she just shifted!
hui: Woa woa woa... Relax. I'm sorry, I was generalizing... :)
